Gambia’s Minister of Health, Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, has confirmed an ongoing investigations in the recent high incidents of maternal deaths in The Gambia.
Recently, hundreds of women have marched in the busy Kairaba Avenue Road carrying placards with inscription ‘Gambian Women Lives Matters’ protesting against the high incidents of maternal mortality in the country.
The Health Minister who appeared before the lawmakers on Thursday, reacted to the queries with an apology to the nation and the families of the victims. He affirmed that investigation is ongoing and that justice will be served.
“It is heartbreaking to hear of the recent maternal deaths,” the Heath Minister stated.
Minister Samateh appeal for public advocacy and awareness creation, adding that maternal mortality is a complex issue that needs collaborative effort to reduce the rate.
Meanwhile, the Minister disclosed that the Ministry of Health has started to license the private health facilities to carry out hospital functions.
